Terminal City

Athens, Greece

My Masters Thesis project titled Terminal City, is sited at the now abandoned Hellinikon Airport in the Glyfada region of Athens. The closure of the airport in 2001 due to capacity issues and the construction of its replacement was accelerated by Athens's bid to host the 2004 Olympic Games. My site focuses on the area directly adjacent to the East Terminal building, designed by Eero Saarinen in the 1960s. The project occupies the aerial, interstitial dimension of the site in which I am proposing a testing and training facility for the ethical application of drones in disaster situations, reframing them as heroic messengers. In addition to the test field the terminal building houses a blood donation facility and drone based dispatch service, capitalising on the site's coastal location to serve the isolated island medical facilities within a set radius of 150km.

The test field is composed of 3 environments for the simulation of various disaster conditions; Obstruction, Fire and Flood. The external field works in tandem with a new piecee at the level of the terminal building's mezzanine; the Icarus Institute for Aerial Ethics. It includes a legal archive and debate chamber for the discussion of new drone developments and legislation. The primary view from the debate chamber is orientated towards the path of departing blood courier drones, .

The reference to Icarus speaks about failure as a result of overreaching, drawing a parallel between flying too close to the sun and the gross mismanagement of funds by governing officials which occurred in Greece in the run-up to Athens 2004, significantly contributing to the national debt, and leading to the proliferation of large sites of abandonment in Athens such as Hellinikon airport.
